Historical places of the city

On October 30, 2020, foreign students from different countries (Turkey, Turkmenistan, and China) and lecturers of the Russian language as foreign of the Faculty for Teaching Foreign Citizens and the Department of Slavic and Romano-Germanic Languages had a tour of the cultural centre of the city and visited the museum of the Gomel palace and park ensemble.

Like all the most ancient cities, Gomel arose at the time when people did not know either writing or chronology. The official date of formation is 1142.

On the initiative and personal funding of the Gomel owner N.P. Rumyantsev, a master plan for the development of the city was developed in accordance with the requirements and rules of urban planning art of classicism. In this regard, the future Gomel was viewed as a unified and integral architectural organism. The new palace ensemble with a park, central Bazarnaya (Sobornaya) square, Gostiny Dvor and shopping malls became the main compositional nucleus of the city. Streets Rumyantsevskaya (now Sovetskaya), and Mogilevskaya (now Kirov), and Zamkovaya (now Lenin Avenue), connecting the palace and the square with other districts of Gomel, formed a three-beam, fan-shaped planning system, the only one of its kind in Belarus.

By tradition, the excursion began from the main building of BSUT, which was known as the men’s Alexander gymnasium. The construction was built in 1898 by the architect S. Shabunevsky.

Passing the old streets of the city and getting acquainted with the architectural creations, teachers and students visited the historical and memorial composition of the palace "The Gomel estate owners the Rumyantsev and the Paskevichs".
