International Olympiad in Theoretical Mechanics in Asia

During the celebration of the 65th anniversary of our university, an agreement was signed with the University of Hohai (Nanjing, China). This agreement gives the University of Hohai the right to host the Asian stage of the International Olympiad on Theoretical Mechanics, which our university has been conducting for 15 years.
At the end of January 2019, this stage took place for the first time. To assist in the conduct of the Olympiad, the staff of our university included the head of the technical physics and theoretical mechanics department Shimanovsky A.O. (as co-chair) and associate professor of the same department Kuznetsova M.G.
Our representatives, at the request of the organizers, prepared competitive tasks for the participants (in English), and also supervised the conduct of the various stages of the competition.
The competition was attended by 308 students from 48 universities, which represented the mainland of China and the island of Taiwan.
According to the results of the theoretical competition, a student of Hohai University Tao Jiale showed the best result. Qian Lixiang from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Yuan Shanming (Southwest Jiaotong University) followed him. The team results of the theoretical competition were the best at the same universities and in the same sequence as the personal results.
In the “Brain-Ring” competition, students from Tianjin University scored the highest points. The second result was shown by representatives of the Hefei University of Technology, the third – by the Southeast University.
In general, the level of results of the competition was similar to the results of the International Olympiads held at our university.
The organizers of the Asian stage of the Olympiad have repeatedly expressed their gratitude to our university in connection with the opportunity provided to them to become the basis for a regional competition, as well as for assistance in organizing the event.
According to the results of the selection, a team will be formed, which will take part in the main stage of the International Olympiad on Theoretical Mechanics, which is planned to be held at our university from April 15 to 18.
